On the 26th of December me and my family took off to Thailand for a two weeks' holiday. We had a direct flight from Helsinki to Phuket, and from Phuket there was a two hours' bus travel to Ao Nang where we were staying. Our plane left Helsinki about 2 p.m. and we arrived in Ao Nang at 10 a.m local time. I hadn't got any sleep on the 11 hours' flight, so the I spent the first day walking around like a zombie.
Ao Nang is a true tourist hell (or heaven if you love shopping and eating on fancy restaurants) and there are no crags in Ao Nang . To get to the climbing areas you have to take a boat to Railey or Ton Sai. Here the climbing is amazing! Several crags are located on the beach so if it gets too hot you can just jump into the sea (requiring high tide on Ton Sai, though). The best climbing time was early in the morning, cause after noon it was simply too hot for any harder sends. After Christmas eve in Finland, with temperatures around -20ºC, it took a while to get used to the almost 50º warmer temperatures in Thailand.
The beach of Ton Sai was sort of this "hippie-beach". Most people there were climbers and the atmosphere was very relaxed and nice. If you don't have a belayer it is very easy to find one specially in the morning. I had a not-too-experienced-belayer (my sister) and I trusted strangers more than I trusted her. In the area of Ton Sai you can find both vertical and steeply overhanging walls. Unfortunately most routes are quite "worn-out". I tried some 8a-routes but I felt terribly out of shape so I didn't manage to send any. I enjoyed climbing there very much anyway and I hope to go there next year again ( hopefully in better shape ).
I'll try to add some photos later but I can warn you that the climbing pictures are not the best possible since they are taken by my mum who's not that good at taking climbing photos...
